Why a new church in Sheepshead Bay?
This story began October 29th, 2012. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, many New Yorkers were left in a state of extreme need. Resurrection Brooklyn, a multi-site network of Brooklyn churches, has sought to join with other concerned New Yorkers to meet those unmet needs. Resurrection Brooklyn Relief was created to to serve survivors of Hurricane Sandy in rebuilding and relocation efforts in coastal south Brooklyn neighborhoods, by acting as a conduit of materials and coordinated volunteer resources.
One of the questions we began to ask right away, “But what about after Sandy relief?” Many of these neighborhoods had challenges long before Sandy and they will remain long after Sandy. How would we continue to serve these neighbors long after the last panel of drywall is hung by our volunteers? As Brian Steadman, our “Pastor of Disaster,” got to know these neighborhoods, talked to its residents and community leaders, and prayed about what should Resurrection Brooklyn seek to do to love our neighbors in south Brooklyn, the answer began to be clear. Resurrection Brooklyn’s vision is to see neighborhood churches started all over Brooklyn. Sheepshead Bay is one neighborhood in particular that our Sandy relief ministry has had a lot of activity. Therefore, why not plant a new church in Sheepshead Bay? In response, Pastor Brian and his family moved to Sheepshead Bay with hopes to see a new church community formed in Sheepshead Bay.
Resurrection Sheepshead Bay desires people to encounter Jesus. This encounter will look different for everyone. We all come to him with unique ideas of who he is, what he did, and what he is doing. But, once experienced, God’s grace in Jesus changes everything. It changes how we see ourselves, the world, our work, our success, failures, areas of brokenness, and sin. God’s grace provides the context for real, substantial life-change that results in one engaging the world in a completely different way. We believe one of the best paths for people to experience this encounter is through a new church.
We welcome all who also find themselves wanting to encounter Jesus and his healing grace. Whether you haven’t been to church in a very long time or have never been to church, we want you to answer Jesus’ invitation to you. After much anticipation, we launched worship on November 22nd, 2015. Our worship services take place weekly at the Sheepshead Bay Yacht Club – 3076 Emmons Avenue – Sunday mornings at 10:30am.
